> Welcome to Pabook.net
Posted by Pab - 2004-02-28 19:09 - 0 comments
Welcome! You've reached Pabook.net; a friendly, English-speaking general discussions community with members from all over the world. We offer all our members a wide range of community-based features including a message board, a chat room, blogs and more.

Everyone is welcome to join us and doing so is free. Simply register for an account and then log in with your username and password and you're ready to start using all the facilities!

We ask that all new members read through the rules & information topics to get accustomed to what we're all about and how to use the different facilities that the community offers. If you're still stuck after that or have any other questions, feel free to start a new topic in the community help forum. When you're ready, be sure to introduce yourself to the rest of the community in the member introductions forum.

On behalf of myself (the site founder) and the other staff members we hope you enjoy your time at our community!

> Return of the mods
Posted by Pab - 2008-03-13 16:18 - 17 comments
It is my privilege to announce the return of two former moderators, zootm and sttaffy, back to the Pabook.net moderating team.

I should explain why we now have a total of 5 moderators despite still being a relatively small community. It's mostly because the other mods have been finding my absences from the site increasingly difficult to deal with, all the while trying to keep the site running smoothly on their own. During these times issues could arise that would require urgent discussion between staff and yet days could pass without a response. Less mods also means more work per mod, and being an active moderator is a lot more work than it might seem. A big thank you to them for putting up with this issue for so long.

While I'm doing an announcement, I will make mention of the Google ads which appeared on the site yesterday. The main one you're likely to see is that at the top of the page, in the board header. It's been styled to blend in with the site quite well, so it shouldn't be a huge distraction. Of course, if you're using Adblock in Firefox or a similar technology you won't see it at all. If you want to support the site, consider adding pabook.net to your whitelist. One last thing; only clicks generate revenue, and while I cannot ask you to just randomly click the links, I will mention that you are helping the site if you click on ads that interest you.

Once again, welcome back zootm and sttaffy. (IMG:http://www.pabook.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

> New skin and forum changes
Posted by Pab - 2008-02-27 16:51 - 47 comments
It's been long-overdue, but Pabook.net finally has a shiny new look and has undergone a forum restructuring. Huzzah!

Our new skin is the result of much tweaking of the "IP.Board Pro" skin that has been included in the last few releases of IPB. While it might look a little dull and grey at first, I think it gives the site a much more professional and consistent look. Hopefully you will agree. If not, give it a few days of proper use before complaining. (IMG:http://www.pabook.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue2.gif)

In addition to the skin, the following forum changes have been made:
  • "Community Games" forum removed, posts moved to "Gaming" (where they used to be)
  • "Help & Feedback" forum removed, posts moved to "The Community" (which is now post-enabled)
  • "Sport" forum removed, posts moved to "News Desk" (where they usually were before)
  • "Welcome Desk" forum moved into "The Community" as a subforum
These actions were taken because all of these forums were basically dead. Their removal means 3 less forums clogging up the board index, as well as hopefully increased activity in the other forums.

Now might be as good a time as any to mention that the site always needs monies for hosting, domain fees and software licenses. If you want to help out by providing some shiny (virtual) coins, direct your (real) eyes towards the subscriptions and donations page. By sheer coincidence I hear it's just been updated, what timing!

> Server move completed
Posted by Pab - 2008-02-21 20:28 - 36 comments
The site has been successfully moved to the new server. I also took the opportunity to update IPB to the latest release, as we were running a few minor versions behind.

I've reverted us back to the default IPB skin for now, as there have been lots of little changes (probably just bugfixes) to the skin so I didn't want to risk my changes causing problems. I'll recreate our normal look soon.

As ever, post any problems you find here. (IMG:http://www.pabook.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

> Community software upgraded
Posted by Pab - 2007-09-21 15:35 - 11 comments
Yup, it's the bi-annual Pab-makes-a-visit-to-Pabook-and-updates-the-software day! Hurrah! (IMG:http://www.pabook.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

As usual, it's the forum and blog parts of the site (yes, that would be all of it) that have been updated to the latest versions. It's all performance enhancements and bug fixes so if all has gone well there won't be much difference, other than a mild boost in site speed of course.

Those with an aversion to numbers below 0 will be pleased to know that the "negative number of personal messages" bug has been fixed. I've also run an SQL query to reset the number of message to 0 for those affected by the problem. Apparently that was 15 members (including me), so you may now rejoice. Hopefully that's the last we'll see of that.

This version of IP.Board comes with a new, simplified skin that is supposed to be easier to modify than the default one. I've disabled it for now because I haven't had a chance to Pabookify it yet. When I do I'll enabled it and make a further announcement so you can try it out.

And one last thing... I spent about 2 hours working on a new "site offline" page last night to use while I was doing the upgrades. I doubt many people saw it in the end, so make a Pab happy and go and admire it anyway...
